County Council And Shannon Library
Consideration was being given to a change over from the present library subscfiption system to the free library service, said. a letter from the Shannon Borough Oouncil received at • a meeting of the Horowhenua County Council yesterday. This would mean the abolition of subscriptions for the use of the library by residents of the borough and the free issue of all non-fiction and fiction of a good literary standard, the loan of books by the National Library Service and the maintenance of the library at a reasonable standard of efficiency. The library would be for the useof borough resident's, 'continued the letter, but if the Horowhenua County Council would make a grant county residents would be entitled to the free service. Alterations in the first year would cost £200, aird if the county was interested in joining the proposal for the benefit of the people in its district, the borough council asked what grant it would be prepared to make for the first year on the baSis of the £200, to be followed by an annual grant. A similar request had been re-: ceiv.ed fro'm Otaki, commented the chainnan, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun. "I, am afraid these grants are beginning to grow and we cannot go on making them f orever. On the i other hand, it cannot be expected ! -that the borough should provide ' the county with free reading matter." j After further brief discussion the request was referred to Crs. J. H. P. I Liggins and J. D. Aitchison to bnng down a report to the council.
