Watersiders Question Cargo Handling Figures
_ AUCKLAND, Feb. 7. Stateraents on tke apparent slowing Jown in cargo handling contained in tho report of a fact iinding cominittee oi* the Port of Auckland Cleara'nce Conference were ehalJenged today by the president of the New Zeaiand Waterside Workers ' Union (Mr. II. Barnes). Ho said that prior to the iatter part of the year 1940, when tfte cooperative contracting bonus system was introduced by the Waterfront Control Commission, 110 accurate record of rates of cargo handling were kept. Mr. Barnes addeii that this was admitted before the Coun of Arbitration in 193S by the late Mr. W. H. Bennett, tlien secretary of the Waterfront Employers ' Association. These facts were kuown to the fact iinding cominittee 's chairman (Mr. Melling). In the past six years, workmg on the rates oiieived by'the emplov- 1 ers in .1938, New Zeaiand watersiders* earned more than £1,000,000 in bonuses. Most of the members of" the fact hndmg cominittee had shown complete laek of knowledge of waterfront worR.
