Library Service Outlined To Council

Miss P. Taylor, of the National Library Service, visited Shannon last Tuesday evening to outline the activities of the service to members of the Shannon Borough Council. Miss Taylor pointed out that free libraries were 'an' aid to higher education and she dealt with all matters offered by the service. She stated that it would b.e a progressive step for Shannon if the council was to change from its present subscription policy. Miss Taylor said that the conditiOns of the service mainly were. to abolish the subscription system for the use of a library for the borough, aiid to issue free all non-fiction and fiction books of a good literary standard, as well' as the books lent by the National Library Service, and to maintain the library at a reasonable standard of efliciency.Miss Taylor inspected the present library and reading room, and suggested several alterations whicli eould be.made if the council was tq make the change. , Several questions asked by members of tbe council were answered by Miss Taylor. The Mayor, ,Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, extended thanks to Miss Taylor for her very interesting address, and for making the visit to Shannon. After the retirement of Miss Taylor from the meeting a general discussion took place, and it was agreed that the matter be held over until a later meeting, A letter has been; sent to the Horowhenua \County ■ Council in connection with the library service, pointing out that whereas the library will be used by borough residents, but if the County Council would make a grant towards the cost, county residents would also be entitled to use the free service. If this was done, an additional supply of books would be made available to the library.
