After the past fortnight 's events it is thought unj likely that the treaty has any chanee of ratihcation. The cani])aign against ) it proved too useful a lever in Ihe I internal political rivalries of the coun- | try where, for the moment, the -^atnioj. sphere appears to have returned in some ! way to what it was during Rashid : Ali's rebellion iil 1941. This is in spite ; of the fact that the treaty offered considerable advantages to Iraq and that other Ddiddle East countries indicated their readiness to open diseussions On siniilar lines. Whatever the outcome. however, Britai.n ia stated to have no intention of allowing the business ot the treaty to afi'ect good relations with Iraq.
