Price Tribunal Not Political Forum
. WELLLINGTON, Feb. 4. The Price ■Tribunal was not a political forum and would not hear of political arguments. This was stressed by Mr. Justice Hunter at to-day's hearing of au application by the Dunedin Oity Corporation for increases in tram fares. The president ruled that Mr. E. W. Hunter,, who had described himself to the Tribunal as representing the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Communist .Party, could attend oniv as a private citi/.en of Dunedin. The president: Is the Communist Party a political partyr? Mr. Hunter: Yes. The president then asked liow a political p'artv could be' made a party to proceedings and Mr. Hunter replieil that the Communist Party was a political party which was interested in the \ydlfare ,of the people and so must be interested in price increases. Tu stating that rhe Tribunal 'was not a political forum, the president said it l ad to be careful who attended as parties tp proceedings.- The Tribunal was concerned only with the rnatter of proper reprfesentation at the hearing and' the Trades and Labour Council should pro.perly represent the people.
