Rumanian Election Draws U.S. Protest

Received Thursday, 10.40 a.m. WASHINGTON, Feb. 4. The United States today accused Rumania of blatantly violating the i provisions of its peace treaty, and claimed that its Government is "intent on wiping out the last vestiges of democratic opposition." The charges made in the note were delivered to the Rumanian Ministry of Foreign Aifairs by the United States Minister, Mr. Rudolf Schoenfeld. . Referring to the 1946 elections, the Ameriean note charged that "all manner of chicanery and extreme physical violence w©£e employed by, or with ihe consent of, the Rumanian Government to reduce the legitimate political actiyity of any elements not subservient to the controlling minority." In a long note to the Rumanian Government yesterday the British Government lodged a strong protest at the infringement of the Human Rights clause in the Rumanian Peace Treaty, implied m the recent prison sentences on Ur. Maniu and other leaders of the National Peasant Party
