Real Sampans Sail Across Stage Lake
China's only two sampans being navigated outside their native waters set sail ;from the east - wihg of stage one at Columbia to the west wing. The boats, flat-bottom-ed and completely seaworthy, are being used in "Assigned to Treasury," in which Dick Powell and Signe Hasso are starred. They were originally scheduled to sail on one of Hollywood's big studio ponds, but it was discovered that they would actually mov.e in less than four inches of water, so it was finally decided to use them on a sound-stage. For this purpose the stage floor was surrounded by a waterproof y/all six inches high. Into this arpa was poured tar and asphalt on top of tar paper, making Hollywood's shallowest lake — four inches in'vdepth and almost" threefourths of the sound stage in area. The sampans were then moved on to the stage, fitted with sails, and with the help of a couple of wina machines, sailed due west, regardless of the weather.
