Britain's Plight Amplified In Personal Letter
A grateful recipient of a food parcel sent from Levin to Burnley, England, has sent a thanksgiving cheque in the donor's name to a benevolent fund. This information was received in a letter 'from a business man to whoin the parcel was consigned. He wrote,- "I am sitting having tea at the shop and am eating a delightful New Zealand ' tongue sandwich. It may give you a better idea'. of the value of your gifts when I say that should our womentolk be so ra'sh as to buy one large tin of pressed tongue for a family of four it would mean foregoihg. the following for a whole month: All cereals, - biscuits, -tinned .meats, vegetables, -canned jam, riee substitutes, syrUp, canned fish, dried. fruits and canhed fruits. The points allowance per month is about 84 for a family of'threb, and the tongue is 40 points per pound." Points were needed for the whole range of foods not rationed separately, continued Mr. Taylor. "I put on a supper for my Boys' Club (about 60 strong) , not so long ago. 'You can imagine the difficulties in providing a half plate of potato pie for 60 growing lads." For a fortnight before the 'supper, there had been a p-otato collection, a points collec^ion for buying tinned meat, a collection' of microscopic particles of fat from thpse who could n}ake the sacrifi.ee and a collection of bread erumbs tomake a crust for the pies. "To such is the Mig'hty Britain fallen! But^we shall win through! God Bless the Dominions, to whom we shall always be indebted. With God'*s Grace, our own sense of hiimour and your help, we shall win through," concluded the writer. ■ ' II II II I ■
