By River To Shannon
In Foxton's early days the popular pastime was a trip to Kapiti Island by steamer for fishing, or up the Manawatu -River — also" "by steamqr — on a picnic .visit. For •many years, however, the beauties of the Manawatu have be'en confined to but a few power boat enthusiasts and fishermen, but of late there has been a ten'dency for the river to become more popular. This season quite a number of people have journeyed by launch from Foxton Beach as far upstream as ' the Shannon Bridge. One of the last parties to make the trip was conveyed in Mr. George Taylor's boat "Miss Janette," and included among those making the trip was Mr. A. Andresen, of Foxton. The party investigated the fishing en route and had a very enjoyable, if not very profitable | time. Spoons were used on rods for trawling in the lowep reaches, and a net used higher . upstream. The total- catch registered was one eel. The power boat "Miss Vesta" met the launch at Whirokino, on the way back ,and escorted it to Foxton.
