The Otaki-trained Grand Centrai, always up liear the front, won the* Hack Hurclles narrowly froni Tribute, with the favourite, Glen Urquhart, and Captain Jesse alnxost in line in a ciose finish. II Corona and Tribute were the leaders past the stand, with Ctrand Centrai, Orient River, New Chum, Glen Urquhart and Captain Jesse next, Poilux having fallen at the first hurdle. Tribute was joined by Grand Centrai as they raeed into the baek stretch, and at. the half-mile Grlen Urquhart cornmeneed a forward move. Tribute was clear as they came to the last hurdle but niade an indift'erent jump. Dark Morning fell at this obstacle and G-rand Centrai came on to hold off cluillenges from Tribute and Gien Urquhart. Captain Jesse fmished on, only a neck away, and then caine' Royai Sward, True Fyiend, New Chum and Bonifort. Detennination was backed down to a short price for the Novice Stakes but could do no better thau finish third to the Awapuni-trained Bright fSide, wite Irish Bcholar separating them. Determiuation was in the lead wlien they settled down, but at the half-inilc Deseription and Lady Minter had lu-aded the favourite, and next in order were Phoenieia, Irish Beliolar, Bright Side, Royal Robin arul Avenger. At the end of a furlong Flving Colours and Polleta led from Kentucky Flight and Perdita, with Leyma moving up from the rear. Turning for home Kentucky Flight headed Polleta, but

Next were Joyful 'Lady, Flying Colours "and Barlous. -Shiraz jumped .out siuartly in the Pohangina Hahdicap and was never aetnally headed, tjiough" Eed Herring nearly drew level at one stage. At the half-mile Shiraz and 'Red Herring werte followed by Drambuie and Dyep Sea, I with Specialist ha.udy. In the run to the judge Shiraz was always doing it ,well to hold off Red Herring by a neck. The eojlcluding event, the Siberia Haek Handicap, was run in -two divisions, the first heing won by the Awa-puni-trained Flare Path and the second by the Trentham representative Veine d'Or. Dickens headed Old Dooley at the straight entrance but Flare Path then ran past them for an easy win. Dickens was second, ahead of Broielink, Jinny Jinks and Niektiby. A blanket finish was provided in the M&nawatu Gorge Hack Cup with the favourite, Fox Flame, from L. Knapp 's stable, getting the verdict' over Beguile and an outsider in Gay Spor.t. Nancy Boswells and Lackamor took up the running at the seven furlongs with Molly Adair, Bright Flash, Gay -Sport, Culloden Moor, Sailor's Song, Graeme 's Jay, Fox Jflame, Haere Huku and Arctic Circle next .in order.
