New Flyingboat Base For Auckland
AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. Intensive investigations are being uiade by otiicers of the Auckland Karbour Board with the view of iihproving Auckland ;s flyingboat facilities. Plans now being considered envisage the e.stablishment of a new base. immediately to the eastward of the present oue at Mechaniea Bay. If this is approved by the Harbour Board, it will mvolve work on the reclamation and also the construction of administrative and service bloeks of workshops, hangars and slipways. The board chairman, Mr. J. Melling, said today it would be necessary to have a long range plan as the port of Auckland was growing in importance year by yfear. "If it is deterrained that a new base is necessary, we wanl to keep it as close to the present location as possible, he added. "I think Auckland is in a' unique position in having an air base practically in thc ' city and we do not wish to see it inoved further away. "
