Memorial To Kiwis Killed At Thermopylae
WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. A monument being erected by the Greeks in the mountain Pass of Thermopylae in memory of soldiers oi the 2nd N.Z.E.F. who fell in the battle there in April, 1941, will be ulaced* on the spot where General Freyberg held a conference with his officers just before the battle commenced. This information was given by Brigadier N. McD. Weir on his arrival in Wellington by the Athenic. • ; Brigadier Weir was for a time in j coiiimand of a British division in | •Greece an'd shortly before he left | the country, lie was asked by the | Greek Minister of War, M. Venize- i 3os, to clioose a site. for the Thermopylae monument. Adcompanied by his aide, Gaptain Norrie, of Auckland, and several Greek officers, Brigadier Weir approved a site which overlooks 'he wh^le of the scene of the New Zealanders' famous battle. Brigadier Weir said that the stat-ue will be of white marble, and he underwood the work had been begun on it, although there was no indication when- it would be completed.
