Five years ago today the 2nd New Zealand Division entered Tripoli. On January 22, after weary days in the desert, the New Zealand Divisional Cavalry and the Maori Battalion engaged the strong German rearguard protecting the withdrawal of Rommel's troops. The next. morning they entered the town. It was ? the 51st Highland Division who first entered Tripoli and hauled 'down the Italian flag at the ancient fort, Castello. Soon after, the first New Zealanders of tho 5th Brieade moved in, but it was some days before the-bulk of the "division saw the town.
