DANNEVIRKE, Jan. 20. "A disastrous' fire oecurred in the centre of the Dannevirke shopping area shortly after 6 p.m. The iire originated in ancl was confined to d double storey wooden building on the east side of Higli Street, known as Cosmopolitan Chanibers, owned by the estate of the late Mr. Leo' Stein. . -The ffre apparently .began in a sho'p qn the grbuiid floor at. the. soutlrern'' enii . of tlie'- premises "and the 'fiaines "Sprehd ! rapidly to the upper storey. Tlier'e wa; little wind and after strenuous efforts by brigadesmen and volunteers, the out break was under control by 7 p.m. By that tirne the top floor was totaily gutted, the bottom part of the south end of the building partly destroved. and tlie remainder severely damaged by stnoke and water. Shops on the ground floor which suffered were: — "Moneysworth" Dcpartmental Store, proprietor, Mr. S. Alexander, completeJy burnt out.
Arch Mills, tobacconist. United Friendly Societies' Dispensary. Maeder Hairdressing Salon. Valet'Dry Cleaners. Patel Brothers, fruiterers. The upstaifs rooms of A. W. Pike, dentist, were destroved and apartments on the upper floor were also damaged. Some occupants o^ the apartment.and some .shop owners, salvaged some oi all of. th.eir goods.
