BRITISH INTEREST IN OPEN-CAST MINING.

Eeceived Monday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 18. One of the largest civil engineering lirms in Britain, M. J. G-leeson, Ltd., of Sheffield, with a staff of 2000 men, is an.xious to examine the possibilities of open-cast coal mining in New Zealand, and is ready to send the latest equipment and inachinery to the Dominion as soon as shipping space can be secured, The Pirm is one of the first to undertako open-cast mining in Britain, and is now working on a largc Uovornment eontract in which it ' is already 30 weeks ahead of schedule. Mr Thomas Blower, e.hief engineer of tho firm, said he is prepared to take tho latest British and American machines to New Zealand, and to send out a skeleton staif immediatnly, fnllv equipped to train New Zealand contrjwtors in the latest methods of opencast mining. Inquiries in offic.ial circles todav showed that no approac.h. has yet been made by the company named.
