^ AUCKLAND, Jan. 19. In a eollision between , the coastal vessels Coronation and Aranui, between Takatu Poiut and Rodney shortly be fore two o'clock this morning, the Coronation 's prow pierced the other craft's hui! at't on the starboard side and smashed the foo-t of the bunk in which the Aranui 's second engineer, Mr, U. Doualdson, was sleepiug. A jagged liole , . large enough for two men to crawl j th rough, was punched in the ship 's side. After signalling the Coronation and linding she was not in danger, the Aranui, wliich was proceeding to Portland, put back to Auckland, Teaching port this morning an liour before the1 Coronation which was bound for Auckland from Awanui. Mr. Donaldson, who was not in-jured, said: "I had not the faintest " idea wliat happen'ed. Splinters were flying down on me and I cleared out of the cabin as quickly as I eould." The Coronation 's bow was splintered but otherwise appeared litt'e damaged.
