DUNEDIN, Jan. 19. Several prominent piayers- were successful in ihe lirst day 's play of the New Zealand croquet championships tournainent today. Miss M. Claughton (Lower Hutt) , last year's winnor of both the Nortn lsiand open and ladieB' chanipionship, Mrs. A. B. .Challen, ehanipion of Vittoria and New South Wales, and Mrs. (1. G. Gilbort (Nelson), South. lsiand ehanipion, won their opeziing games. In the men's section W. Kirk (Geraldine), last year's South lsiand open ehanipion, A. G. E. Ross (Manawatu), who has hcld all titles over a number of years, and W. S. Beamish, N.Z. open champion, also scored. Morning rain prevented play from eommencing on scliedule and the first games were not started until 1.30 p.xn., Results: — Championship Mrs. Polton (Southland) beat Miss A.
