Farmer on Serious Charge
MASTERTON, Jan. 19. Charged with having committed rape at Te Oreore on December 17 on a 17 years old 'girl, Edward Cornelius Wad hani, aged 58, farmer-, of Carterton, pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for trial, wlien he appeared before Messrs A. D. Low and P. P. Fagan, J.P. 's, in tho Masterton Magistrate's Court thisevening.
The police alleged that Wadham ofl'ered a bfibe of £50 to the chief witness, fishing lier to tell the police "that a man had knocked her down in the park and talcen advantage of her." Detective Sergeant Gordon sajd in evidence that while in the police station Wadham had opened a well fllled wfillet and said he would do a'nything to get out of the troublo he was in.
