Received Tuesday, 11.40 a.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 19. A wall of water, raised by a typhoon, has caused appalling destruetion on Yap Island, a former Japanese base in the Western Pacific, 1150 miles east of Manila, according to reports from the United States Navy. More than 85 per cent. oi' the island's 13,000 population are homeless. Fifty-six United States Navy men and six families are safe. Thcy are huddled on high ground to which they were driven by the sea rolling in from the beaches. Forty-eight hours after the typhoon had almost levelled the island, huge waves swept across it.
