Spearman, of his iast chance in the singles .and went on to take one life from J. F. Benson, Balmoral, in an exciting ganie. Play in the pairs competition was also brought to an advanced stage, six teams being left at the conclusion of the day, the only two-lifers being the North East Valley pair, S. Dodd and E. H. Mingins (Onehunga) maintained his uubeaten record when he met the Te Aroha player, M. R. Buchan, in his iirst gamo of the day but was beaten when he came up against his .i'ellow Aucklandcr, J. E. Benson has been one of ihe most consistent and -attractive players in the competition and he scored a surprisinglv easy win over the Onehunga player. • The only surviving two-lifers, Benson and Symons, met in the tenth round, Benson winning comfortably by 17 — 11.
