Main Trentham Sprint Event To Ladyship
The Wellington Cup, with its £6100 prize, was the highlight of a feature programme at Trentham on Saturday. A furlong from home there were a dozen horses well in the picture and a blanket finish seemed likely. However, ther paee from the mile had been £usco^cher,, and after the wild race for positions on the home turn, most of the horses were left w'ithont a fiiia.l run. "When Spare Part's jockey asked him for an extra effort the Southland eandidate drew right away to win as he liked by five lengths. Beau le -Havre, last after seven furlongs, had to sustain a long run ' wide out, to be within striking distance of the leaders at the top of the straight. He finished with rare courage to gef second money, two lengths in front of Dunbar, which made up a loj; of ground over the last half mile. Desert Fox, not in the call half a mile from home, was fourth, Howe, after being with the leaders all the way, was fifth, the fast-finishing Indian Dawn was sixth, and Langue d'Or, Awapuni 's only representative, was seVenth.
No Paee On Early Tlie going was lieavy and there was liglft rain just bel'ore the field was lined up for the start. There was little paee 011 early and Falconbridge, Howe, King's Ransora, Barrage, Eobin's Reward, Loyal Bian, Regal Praise and Dunbar wrere all under a good hold as the field raeed past the stands. Appfoaehing the mile post Falconbridge suddenly dashed to a clear lead and Howe' went after him. That started it and with the paee suddenly eracked 011 it was a wild dash to the far turn where Spare Part, three out, went up to join Howe and King's Eansom. Nest was Langue d 'Or on the rails, and Loyal Bian, Barrage and -Falconbridge were there and Beau le Havre fuur or live out was just in front of Eoyal Tan, also wide out. Howe, King's Eansom, Spare Part, Langue d'Or aud Beau le Havre were prominent iuto the straight aud, Dunbar, Desert Fox and indian Dawn were improving. Over the last bit, however, Spare Part drew away to win easily. Totalisator Was Down £54,627 The weather was iine for most of tlie day but there were scmie light showers.
