PAIRS CHAMFIONS OF LAST YEAR BEATEN • DUNEDIN, Jan. 10. Both the singles'-and pairs competitions in the championship toujnament of the New Zealand Bowling Association reached a well advanced stage today, the hfth day of play. Some of the fancied players in both contests wero , eliminated but the survivors includea many who have been prfhninent Tn toui;nament play oyer a period of years and the games in which some of them were engaged attracted iarge galleries, especially on the St. Kilda green wliere a crowd of severaJ hundred followed with gfeat intorest the play of the romaining two-lifers in the singles and the better know'n .one-lifers. At the end 0f tlie day''s play e'ighi rounds had been conipleted in tlie pairs in which there remained three twolifers and 22 players with oue lit'e. Tlie „singles competition was a little more involved and while some players had completed their ninth "games, others who were still engaged in the pairs, had still to play their games i"n the eiglith round. Spencer (Invercargill "R.-S.A.), who was given the ehance of taking one or other of the championships, had tlie misfortune to be affectod by a clxill in his back and there was no doubt that this contriluited to his downfall 111 both the pairs and singles yestferday. Bremner (Epsom) and A. K. Hamilton and J. Middinmas (Alexandra), both entered the eighth round holding two lives. Mitchell (Blenheim; had three handy wins in the pairs, and drawing a bye in the eighth round, finished- the day with two lives still intact.
