MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MONTHLY SITTING IN OTAKI The monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Otaki was held on' Thursday, Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., presiding. Charged with passing a car without obtaining a clear vision of at least 18 feet, Muriel McKee was fiiied £2, with 10s costs/ Constable W. Calwell told the court that defendant had overtaken a car and as a result of cutti'ng in had caused damage to it. Excessive speeding at Waikanae cost Raymond Henderson £7 10s, tvith 10s costs. Traffic Inspector Davis said that defendant was driving a two-ton truck, and when he first observed the vehicle its speed was 60 m.p.h. Later it increased to 74 m.p.h. but on approaching the Waikanae Bridge defendant had been obliged to stop, when witness caught up with him and questioned hirn. The Building Controller proceeded against C. A. Quane on a charge that he did constructional ;work at Waikanae without a permit. Mr. C. F. Atmore represented the Building Controller and Mr. B. H. Rhodes the defendant. Mr. Atmore told the court that Quane had applied for a permit to erect two army huts, but had erected three, which he was not authorised to do. Mr. Rhodes stated that the .summons had been issued "only on Saturday, and details of the case were not av^ilable. A fine of £16, with costs, was imposed. Judgment by default was issued in the followin'g civil case: Bak--ers S'tores (Mr. Rhodes) v. W. G. Standen £5 16s 7d, costs £1 3s 6d.
