GOVERNMENT VICTORY IN TRAM STRIKE
Reeeived Friday, 10.15 p.m. MELBOURXE, Jan. 16. . The settlement of the transport upheaval which threatened to paralyse the crty, is undoubtedly a Government victory. The Premier, Mr, Hollway, is content. to ret'er to the settlement as "a triumph for good Australian comtnonsense. " He added , that the Communists had broug'ht the trade union movement to Ihe verge of destruction and that it had been saved only by tlie more moderate elements of the Trades Hall Council. The. leader of the Labour Party, Mr. Cain, exerted every effort to end the strike without invokiiig the new Einergency Powers BilL. The Rtate exeeutive of the framways Employees' Association recorded a strong pi'Otest against the "punitive legislation passed by the Rtate last night," and urged a recommendation to their exeeutive that they will worn a six-day roster until April 1 and will get a five-dav 40-hour week then or on April 15, and overtime for meal breaks of more than one hour under the interim six-day rostor. The strike began 13 days ago and has cost £162,500 in loss of revenue and £5.4,500 in loss of wages. The seamen and . watersiders decirtea to end their strikes at midnight tonight.
