LEGAL BATTLE LOOMS OVER FORTUNE
A legal battle is looming for the £2,000,000 whiGh ex-King ■ Victor Emmanuel of Italy left in Britain. Ex-King Victor Emmanuel died at Alexandria (Egypt) on December 28. Just before he died he tried .to pledge his last remaining personal jewels and heirlooms. He wanted to raise money to fight for the £2,000,000 he had "salted away" in Britain. The money was "frozen" when Italy entered the war against Britain in May, 1940, and the C'ustodian of Enemy Property holds it. The Government of the Republic of Italy claims it. Victor Emmanuel's heir, ex-King-Umberto, sent two anvoys from Lisbon 'to London to press his claims to the money. The British Government is entitled to hold it .until the Italian Government has satisfled all outstanding claims of British natlcmal's. •
