SPARE PART CHOSEN FOR CUP

L.M.

M.) ' .

BLUE TROUT FANCIED IN OPEN SPRINT

(SPECIAL — From

WELLINGTON; Friday. The stage is set for the 1948 Wellington; Gup rneeting, which will open at Trentham tomorrow. The .track this morning was in fast order and if the weather holds the meeting will open under ideal summer conditicins. The general opinion is that the Wellington Cup presents one of the most difficiilt problems tackled by race- • goers for some time. Favouritism promises to be f airly widely disputed, but the majority of Trentham ideas are that King's Ransom, Beau le Havre, Howe and Indian Dawn' will have most in their favour. However, •.it. will not surprise to also see a good following for the southerner, Spare Part. , One of the few ideas generally agreed upon is that the open sprint, the Telegraph Handicap, is one of the strongest fields that has lined up for this event in many years. Favouritism' will rest between Blue Trout and. •Majesty and it seems that these two will give their supporters the 'thrill of the race. However, The Pagan and A'ggravation will not be without solid support.

Best recent form in thc Te Marua Highweight is held by Tremello, Paganini, Rotlmic, and Beneve. If this event should prove to be Tremello's mission he must be one of the hardest to beat after his spiendid perforniance in the Pahiatua Cup. Rothnic's form has been excelient of late and he should carry solid support. Paganini is smart on the flat as also is Beneve whose recent race has greatly benefited him. Best of the othjars are Embrolita, General Lytup, Tribute and Gynerio. The iast named has been working well and is a likely lightweight place prospect. Wellington Stakes A keen duel is expectea in the Wellington Stakes bet\yeen those two smart sprinters Great Trek and" Tauloch. Northerners are confident that- Tauloch will master Great Trek, but that remains to be seen on the Trentham track. Great Trek did not appreciate the reverse way round at Ellerslie an'd'it is only logical to state that Tauloch might be affected in the same way at Trentham. Therefor'e, I should say that Great Trek appeals strongly in this field. Of the others Magical should be the best.

Pencarrow Handicap 'Some smart hacks will be seen out in the Pencarrow Handicap, notable among these being Palse Step, Torrent, Angell Miss Bairnsfather, Mr. Pym and Broie. Although drawn an outside marble False Step has the speed to reach the front early and well ri'dden must be a prospect. Another smart customer is Torrent whose recent form should be remembered 'at the meeting. Mr. Pym has drawn a good marble, but he will have to be particularly smart out of the barrier to hold his position early. Mi'ss Bairnsfather has not raced recently and might need the outing. Angell has drawn an outside marble, but can be relied on to race prominently at the meeting. Winning Ticket is a good hack at best, but might not be quite ready. Fitzherbert Handicap The Fitzherbert Handicap for two-year-old fillies should prove an interesting race with such good youngsters as Pitoitoi, Air Belle, Stellar and Balkis engaged. Of the others the best are likely to be Jolly Lass, Swan Lake, Jaconet and Hush. Swan Lake has been working attractively as also have the Hastings pair Hush and Jaconet. However, the issue seems to rest with the first mentioned four. Air Belle worked attractively in the trials at Trentham as also did Stellar. They ar.e both very fit. Wellington Cup The Wellington Cup is likely to provide the thrill of the day, for with such proved stayers as Beau le Havre, N.Z. Cup, Balgowan, Auckland Cup, Indian Dawn, Dunedin Cup, Lange d'Or, Marton Cup, Howe, unlucky to lose Auckland Cup, King's Ransom, a second { Auckland Cup) and two wins at the recent Ellerslie meeting, Spare Part, classed the best middle-distance horse in the South Island,' Desert Fbx, Royal Tan and Royal Victor, third in N.Z. Cup. No doubt the! winner is concealed* among the abovementioned horses. After his fine performances at Ellerslie King's Ransom is the ruling favourite and

he certainly will he one of the hardest to beat.' Beau le Havre, fifth in the Auckland Cup, even with 9.9 will be seen to much better advantage than at Ellerslie, where he suffered a rocky passage. With W. Connor in the saddle, I am eonfident Beau le Havre will hstve the rest of the field stretched ri'ght out to hold him at the post. Howe, after his spiendid race in the Auckland Cup, will have a strong following. Balgowan might not be so happy.on the Trentham course as at Ellerslie. Indian Dawn might be troubled over the distance, as also might Royal Tan, but - Royal Victor should hold a' stayer's chance. The lightweights Spare Part and Desert Fox are not without outside prospects, especially Spare Part, who is very fit and a distinct prospect at the meeting. Ruapehu Hack Solidly backed at Ellerslie, Tenor Royal failed to handle the reverse way, but in the' Ruapehu Hack he will again come in for solid support. He is in solid condition and' should give an excelient account of himself. Beechwood has a liking for Trentham, as also has Blank Cheque. Earnbridge is a form prospect as also is Waimanu, Commercial', Lady Vite and Embrolita, if started here in preference to the Highweight. Telegraph Handicap* • >: > The Telegraph Handicap is ju'st as open as the Wellington Cup, as it contains the best sprinters in the country. No doubt the brilliant northerner Majesty will be in strong demand, as • also will Blue Trout, Flowerburn, Deprive, Aggravation, Patmos, Morocco and The Pagan. Unless an upset is in store, the winner should co'me from the above. Brilliant out from the barrier, Blue Trout in No. 1 . position appeals strongly. With W. J. Broughton up The Pagan will carry strong support. Aggravation's record is an inspiring .one. Of those lower down the weights Brown Derby, who has previously won at long odds at Trentham is a prospect, as he always races kindly on this course, as also do Castlebrae and King of Quiz. However, the result seems to be confined to such ■ class sprinters as Majesty, Blue Trout, Aggravation and The Pagan. Anniversary Handicap The programme will conclude with the Anniversary Handicap for open milers. Distinction, who will have Broughton in the saddle, is sure to come in for heavy support as also are Merry Robin, Sun Biirn, Faultina and Wild Note. If a surprise should be in store it is likely to come from such horses as Treasure Tee, who should go a merry mile, Welcome Guest, Deep Sea, Carmelita and Foxella. Sun Burn is proving his quality and well ridden might prove a "good thing."
