WELLINGTON,, Jan, 15. A slight quiver about 5.3 p.m. in Wellington today was the preludo to a sharp earth tremor. Buildings swaye'd diseoneertingly for about 15' seconds before the 'quake graduaUy diautiishea in Intensity. Slight tremo'rs could be f'elt. for several seconds after the major shake. The 'quake was widespread over the No?th Island.? Bepojts from. Nelson and.'Marlboroughindieate that sharp jolts were recorded in these districts. New Plymouth, Taihape, Stratford, Wanganui, Levin* 'Masferto.n, Napi.ec and Hawera all report faifly severe shocks. • At New Plymouth occnpants of houses and shops rushed iqto fhe streets. -Several chimney pots toppled at Taihape. " No serioug damage is reported from any district. The Acting Director of the Dominion Qbservatory," Mr. R. C. Hayes, said ne estimated the strength of the 'quake in Wellington as 4 on the modifled Merealli scale. The definition of this strength on the scale reads: "During the day felt indoorn by mauy, o,ut doors b.y few. At night some awakened., Dishes, windows and doors disturbed, walls make a cracking sound and a sensatfon like a heavy truclc stRking a building. Standing motor ears rock noticeably. ' '
