WAR VETERAN TANKER
TOW ACROSS THE PACIFIC Arriving recently at San Francisco after crossing the Paciflc at the end of a tow-line, the oil tanker Mobiluhe will, after being reconditioned, rejoin the Vacuum Oil Company's tanker fleet. The Mobiluhe, built in 1939, Was in the company's service in 1943 when she was torpedoed not far from Sydney, Australia. ARhough extensively damaged, she di-d not sin.k and was towed to Sydney, wliere she was requisitioned by the U.S. Navy and made into a ffoating oil-storage receptacle. Subsequently she accompanied advaneed echelons in the attack on Japanese positions and when declared surplus in 1946, was ^purchased by SoconyWaeuUm i^Gil ' Company, her former owners. As the battle-searred 'war veteran was in no condition to return under her own power to the United States for reconditioning, she was towed across the Pacific by another of the company's tanker fleet. The distance of 6385 nautieal miles was covered in'45 days at an average speed of 6.08 "knots per hour, or about 146 nautical miles per day. It is expected that the Mobiluhe will shortly resume hormal tanker operations, thus confrihuting to the relie-f of the world tanker shortage.'
