NEARLY KILLED THEMSELVES
TWO SHANNON YOUTUS IN CQURT "You might .easily have killed. yourselves," commented Mr. A, M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate's Qourt, Levin, this morning when twd Shannon youths appeared 'be-' fore him on traffic oifences. One, Colin Ross Harris, U-year-oid apprentice engineer, was charged with driving without dqe care ,an,d attention and with having no driver's iieence, while his com,^ , panion, Ernest James Harper, who appeared in conj'unction with Harris, was charged >with having no ' driver's licence. Both plea'ded guilty. F'or the . poiice, Sergeant w. Grainger stated that Harper, the ; owne-r". of a: 1928. model car, had driven to Levin fro'm Shannon. He was not at that time the Rolder of :a driver's, licence, Qn the way ; back, Harris had persuaded Har= , per to allow him to drive home, ■ Harris had never driven before and when traveliing aiong- the ihakara straight, he had decided to "try the- old car out," The vehicle had reached 40, . m.p,h. and Harris had then lost control of it, with the resu.lt that it swerved across the road and era'shed into. a fcwelve foot ditch. . Harris was convicted and flned '£1, with 10s costs on each eharge, and Harper £1, with 10s costs, dh ihe eharge against him.
