The district supervisor of the Department of Housing, replying further to the council's suggestion that the septic tank system be installed in- the State house units on the corner of Ballance and Margaret Streets, said that his deci'sion was based on the experience on soakage pits up to 18 ft. deep in the borough. The superintendent went on to say that the borough may have cases where the conditions are considered satisfactory to owner-tenants, but the standard aimed at for State tenants must be free of nui'sance. It was pointed out at the meeting that an en-' deavour is being made to improve the sanitary arrangements and the installation of a pan system in the State units was a retrograde step. The town clerk was directed to again write to the Housing Depart- • ment. The secretary of the Municipal Associatjon- advised that the Municipal conference is to open in Dunedin in April and his association would be glad to have remit's from the local council for conference discussion. He. also stated that he was arranging for the installation of a hot water service to the borough dwelling in Stout Street. The chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, reported that he had made arrangements with a Mangaore resident- to see that the water supply intake is clear and to watch the reservoir. The council decided to approve of Cr. Sayer's action.
