A big kauri tree in the Puketi forest which was to have been felled on the second day of January and converted into a giant eanoe to be ioeated on Latce Omapere in fuliilment of an ancient pro phecy, is still untouched. The hlaoris Itad expressed the inten tioji to present the Prime Ministei (Mr. Fraser) with the eanoe in appie ciation of his efforts on' behalf of tne Ngapuhis.
The tree ehosen stands m an area eontrolled by the State Forest Department, which has asked for the paymeni of £128 in royalties, and it is understood the Maoris appointed by the elders to fell the tree have been refused admittance to the forest. It is now learned that nothing further will be done until the. Surplus Land.Jommission, which sat at Kaikohe r.e cently, has given its judgment on tht Alaoris' claim to the forest.
