CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 14. Record numbers of lambs, near'y double the numbers at the same time, last year, are being killod by freezing works in Canterbury and if sufficieut sliipping is available, meat will be sent to the United Kingdom much earlier this year. The long dry spell in the provinee has been responsible for lambs coining in earlier than usual but thc works have beti able to cope with the rush. Premiunu for early killing? and an appeal to farniers to get lamos to the freezing works early so that sheep and cattle could be preparod tor export later, have met with a good re sponse and killing started as much as a fortnight early at some works. With a continuation of the dry spell during December, lambs began to come m with a rush and up to Christmas killings were a record. Lambs coutinuecl to come in after 'olie holiday' break. The pressure is expected to ease about the end of next week. Alost of the lambs coming in have been satisfactory although there have been as many hea\wweights as in previous years and the number of seconds has increased. It is eonsiderecL, howevet, that this season 's export ligures will be higher than last year's.
