. , Pleading guilty to the- tlieft .of £53 in money from Thomas Big'gs at Otaki on October 4, Eric James Merc'er, stable hand, single, aged 19, of Oamaru, was comniitted to the Supreme Goui't at Wellington ^for sentence when lie "appeared before Messrs J. T. Bosworth •and. W. C. Cannon in the Magistiate's Cqurt-at Palmerston North yesterday. \ Thomas Biggs, a jockey of Trentham, ,said he\ attended a race meeting at -Otaki on -Oc.tobef 4. . Hfe rode a horse in- the seeond race and when h'e changed ,ihto his riding clothes he piaced a sum of money in the breast pocket. of his coat whieh he tlien put in his locker. The amount was between £50 and £60. -Later- in ,the day he found the money had been stolen. He. knew aceused' and' •had seen him in the jockey's room that day.- - ; Senior Detectiye O. Power produced a statement made by aceused to Detee tive Sergeant Hill at Oamaru,* in whieh Mercer admitted stealing £53 from' a sports coat in the jockey's room al Otaki on October 4.
