Received Thursday, 9 a.m. MELBOURNJE, Jan. 15, Desperate eflorts were made late on Wednesday night by the moderate leaders and members of the Labour political party to settle the tramway strike before Parliament meeis this afternoon to deal with che Government emergency legislation. Whether the efforts will succeed will • be decided today bv a lunch aour meeting of employees of the Newport railways and power house, and an afternoon meeting of the striking tramwaymen. Little hope is held that the mod"erates will outvote the militants, alchough all unions express ajarm at the Government's proposed legislation. The Federal Council of the Tramway 's tPhion will discuss today the Tramway Board's proposal to apply for the de-registration of the Tramways' Union. The dispute will be discussed tonight by the Trades Hall Council, when it is expepted that the militants will attempt to control the meeting and consolidate opposition co the Government legislation.
