TAUMARUNUI PROTESTS
NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 9. A strong protest against the omission in the Gaming Commission 's report of any reeomnrendation supporting the claims of the Taumarunui Picnic Hack Racing Club 'for a totalisator permit, was madc at a meeting of the eommif:tee of the club today. "Taumarunui is not mentioned from the start to finish of the report," said the president, Mr. D. S. Allen. "I don't suppose tlie population eatered for by the six clubs from which the commission wishes to take licenees would, if put together, equal the population of our district but this appears to make no difference whatsoever." An important .point made by the Commission in its report. was tuai totalisator permits should be given aceording to public iuterest, continued Mr. Allen, yet the Taumarunui Club had made a case pointing out tliat there were 13,000 people liviug within a 20-mile radius of Taumarunui. When the places at which totalisator meetings were Tield, were marked on a map of the North Island, the inequalities of distribntion of permits were absolutely glaring. . . !
