8YDXEY, Jan. 9. A reduc.tion in pay imposed with the introduetion of "the 40-liour week threatens to preeipitate a shipping hold-up throughout Australia. Tlie men alfected are the menibers of tlre Hliip Dockers' and Painters' Pnion, whieh will begin strike action tonight. Tliese men are paid by the hour, and tliey have been notilied that tvitlx their hours of work redueed by four, they xvill hoav earn Kis a xveek less. The men are demaiiding the same w'eekly payment because, they sav, the Federal 40-liour award stipulated that there shall !>e 110 reduetion in wages. About 250 painters and dockers eniploved by the Fiiioii Hteain Ship Company have deeided that uiiloss their elaims are met they will strike tonight. The Federal Arbitration Court has been notilied of tlie disjmte, in whieh about (1000 men throughout Australia are involved. The Xewcastle painters and dockers sav they will not work after tonight for the present rates. In Brisbane the dockers and painters will ltold a nxass meeting on Runday to dis euss strike action. In 5relboume 700 nuMiibers of the union will strike tonight unless the rates of pay are increased by tlireejieiuv an luiur. Oir their nresent hourly rate the men receive £S 4s a week for 44 hours.
