McKenzie's Figfat To Retain Singles Title

The biggest surprise of the fourth day's play in the -New Zealand tenn'is championships at' Stanley Htreet today,. was the defeat of Ihe eighth seeded player in-*the men's siirgles, N. 'F . N. Bedford, by a fellow Aiicklander, R. W. Smith. The defending champion, 3- B. McKenzie (Wellington) was untroiv bled to defeat A. S. Burns (Auckland) iw. four sets. McKenzie played his best teimU offi-the tournament to date and appeav's to be gradually building iip speed in the endeavour to retain the title for the 1 third suceessive year. O. M. Bbld (Hutt Valley) beat E. D B. Lusk (Auckland) after a thr^e-set baselinebattle, Bold plaj'ed his u-ssual " volley board" game, returning stead--" ily and saved several set points in the vital first set whieh he won at S— 6. J. E. Robson (Otago), who defeated McKenzie in the Nortli Island linal at Hawera last weelc, beat L. P. Boaeh (Waikato) in straight sets. 'Robson is. the only player in the men's semi-linals' not to liave lost a set on the way. In the men's semi-finals to be played tomorrow McKenzie meets Bold and Robson plays Smith, with McKenzie and Robson likelv to be the iinalists. Bold and Miss B. Potter (Auckland) ha-d a good win over Gunn (Auckland) and Miss Beverlev ^Waikato) to enter the semi-finals of tlie mixed doubles. Gunn and Miss Beverley, former |itle holders, were runners,-ux) last year. Bold and Miss Potter 's win ' makes tkeni strong favourites for the mixed title: S. Painter and Mrs. Painter (Wellington) entered the semi-ffnals at the other end of the draw with a win over B. O'Connor and iliss A. Walker (Wel- , lington). There were no surprises in the men's and women 's doubles whieh reached quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. No women 's singles were played today but in the semi-finals tomorrow morning Miss E. G. Attwobd (Auckland) plays Mrs. J. J. MeVay (Wellington) and Miss M.
