NEW EPOCH FOR BRITISH CAR INDUSTRY
The British motor.-car industry is on the threshold of a new epoch in the opinion of its National Advisory Council. ' . In a report published in the form of a White ' Paper, the council says;. "The industry is now more open than ever before to major techni'cal developments. For example, no onS can forecast whether the power unit will reniain a fourcycle engihe or be an entirely different petrol unit; or whether the diesel type of engine or even the turbine or other. poV/er units may be developed for cars." ' , The report goes on to emphasise the importance of the specialisgd oroduction maintained in 'Britain. Mjeasures of standardisation and quantity of production must, it says, be compatible with the pre-4 •servation of a structure in which there is a place for quality and scope for experiment and1 develop- " ment. The value of British motorcar exports is not to be measured by the number of vehicles. The export of one car at £1000 is of as much value to the country as the "expert of five( cars at £200 each, "and the market for the specialist quality car, although it must always be restrieted, is one in which this country has shown itself p'eculiarly weli fitted to occupy a prominent place, . and which it would be folly to abandon."
