In response to the1 otfer of Mr. Arch Lowe, Hastings, to gi re away- pliims and peaches' becween 7 p.m. and '9 p.m. there was, in Mr. Lowe's words, "a tremendous rush, ' ' and between 150 anci 200 cases of ripe fruit were given away. A queue started to fo.rm by 6 o 'eloek on the day of • his an louneement and, as Mr. Lowe adhered to his decision not to start his free di§tribution untii the advertised honr, the queue of cars was several chains long by 7 o'cloeK. " And, ;; said Mr. Lowe,''"it continued to grow in spite of the speed with which we endeavoured to meet the demand. ' ' Mr. Lowe stated that many people oflfered to pay for the fruit, and all were grateful. Several expressed the opinion that it was a sensible way to deal with surplus fruit, rather than a?low it to rot.
