LOCAL AND GENERAL
■ w Personal Mrs. G. M'ercer, Stout Street,' has returned home after spending the holidays with her sister, Mrs. G. Hampson, of. Taumarunui; Mr. W. H. Eagle, of Karori, Wellington, is the guest of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. E. • Allen, "Te Maire," Shannon. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jamieson, of Te Awamutu, have been visiting. Mr. and Mrs. Jamieson, Senr., Kara Road. Miss Paula Small, of Palmerston North, spent yesterday ■ with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R. Small, Stout Street, prior to leaving for Wellington to take up a new position. Visitors Depart „ Shannon had quite a number of visitors over the festive season and on Sunday and yesterday many were homeward -bound. All means of transport out of town were quite heavily taxed. Card Party Winners The Poutu Maori Pah committee held another of its weekly card tournaments in Laurvig's Hall last evening. There was a good attendance of players and the prizewinners were Mrs. A. Tremewan and Mr. J. Sinclair. Town Quietening Down The town seems to have quietened down after the holiday season. When the shops re-opened yesterday there was no great rush and a quiet period is expected by local shops. A Popular Spot Although neighbouring beaches attract local bathers during the holidays and weekends, the Manawatu River is a popular plape for an after-work dip. Each afternoon and evening sees quite a muster of swimmers enjoying a plunge in the cool waters of the river. The Call of the Hills It was surprising the number of picnic parties which chose the quietness of the hills to spend a day in the open over the holidays. Many picnic parties left Shannon for Mangaore, while others ventured further, going right to the back dam at Mangahao. Several parties of deer stalkers also spent the holidays in the hills behind Shannon. Harvesters Busy • Many of ■ the district's farmers who left their harvesting until after the holidqy season are now busily engaged in 'hay'making. The .ahsence of the old tirne method of stacking hay is-hqw very hoticeable in: this district. Most.fafmers are now using the more up -vh-date harvesting eqUipment to bale their hay. This makes both stacking and feeding oiit much easier.
