N.Z. TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

McKENZIE NEARLY BEATEN BY YOUTHFUL OPPONENT * AUCKLAND, Jan. 5. A nSrrow escape from defeat by R. S. McKenzie, New Zealand singles champion, was a f eatiire of ■ the' second day's play in the New Zealand tennis championships at Auckland today. McKenzie won his -seeond round >mateh against P. Beeroft, of Auckland, in -five sets but appeared in grave danger of defeat half way -through" the second- set and again at the 'end of the- f ourth; McKenzie made many 'errors particularly in service during the first set and went down 2 — 6 to' Beeroft 's all-round superiority and gi'eater speed. In the seiond set the champion delibe'rately slofwed the game down and concentilated: on placements, scoring many points with a fine cross-eourt fofehand, to take the second and third sets at 6 — -3 and 6' — 2. McKenzie was leading 4—1 on his own service when the fourth set was adjourned about t&n minutes for rain and on resumption lapsed into errors again, Beeroft winning the set at 6 — 4. The final set began with McKenzie shaking his head sorrowfully and the champion had to call on full powers of concentration and experience to take the set and match at 6 — 1. Beeroft 's display for a 21-year-old player. of limited tournament experience, was most praiseworthy. McKenzie made far too many errors for a player of his standing and will have to eliminate the mistakes to defeat S. Painter and O. M. Bold, both of whom he will have to beat to reaeh the final. E. W. Bmith beat the Ganterbury. champion, G. Angas, in a five-set niarathon. All the seeded players won their matches. The second round of- the women 's singles produced no major upsets. The champion, Miss M. Beverley, of Waikato, won with the loss of one game and Miss E. G. Attwood, runner-up last year, was also untroubled to win. Miss Attwood is to play Miss B. Potter, of Auckland, tomorrow and is expected to be extended by Miss Potter who played very well today. A> strong gusty wind again provided trying conditions for the players while light showers of rain eaused two brief adjourninents. Results: — MEN'S SINGLES. Second Round. R. S.
