Uncomfortable Heat With the mercury over or near 80 degrees in the shade during the holidays, Waitarere Beach and the various picnic spots along the banks of the Ohau River provided an escape for many from the uncomfortably hot weather. Food Parcel Appreciated For some moiiths the Levin branch of the R.S.A. has been forwarding food parcels to needy exservicemen in Broughton, England, and numbers of lCtters of thanks have been received by the branch and members of ihe. ladies' committee which assists with the pack-. ing. Orie of the packers recently received a letter conveying appreciation and seasonal greetings from the recipient of a parcel, and with it a calendar for the R.S.A. club rooms. Assault Alleged . A Chinese fruiterer, Yee Gmg, Sang, aged 32 years, of David Street, Palmerston North, was admitted to the Palmerston North Public Hospital on Saturday night for the treatment of injuries alleg.edly received as a result of an assault made on him in David Street at about 10.30 p.m. It is understood that the extent of his injuries is not great and his condition is reported to be satisfactory. The police are investigating. Identification Of Body - The police believe that the badly decomposed body found in the scrub at Te Marua, near Upper Hutt, on Friday, -may be that of Mr. Sampson John Lake, aged about 70, a former sawmill employee. A ration book found in the dead man's possession was used some months ago to obtain supplies from a grocery store at Raupunga in the Wairoa district. Mr. Lake is known to have been in that district some time ago. Septuagenarian Cyclist Mr. T. P. Brown, aged 76, of Wanganui, who is making a cycling tour of the East Coast, has covered 60,000 miles by this means in the past 37 years. In spite of his years, Mr. Brown is fit and well and pushes his pack-laden cycle at a brisk pace. In 1946 Mr. Brown cycled from Wanganui to East Cape. He carries a small tent, but prefers to sleep in the open when the weather is fine. Mr. Brown has ridden the same -bicycle for the 37 years of his travels..
