ATHLETIC RECORDS BROKEN UNOFFICIALLY
TIMARU, Jan. 4. Two New Zealand athletie records were unofficially broken .at a sports meeting on Saturday held at the conclusion of the National Coaehing School in Timaru during last week. R. W. Mear, a 17-year-old jnnior from Taumarunui, broke the nationaj junior broad jump record when he jumped a distan.ce of 22ft, lllin,,. only 3^in. -less than'the best performance ever made by a New Zealander in this event, Cf. P. Keddell, of Southland, who jumped 23ft. 3in. Mear also rau second to .D. R. Bat^eu, uational spriut champion, in the 100yds, scratch race, Batten clockiug 9 9-10 secouds with Mear in eveu time. The preseut national junior record for this distanee is 10 1-5 seconds. The second reeord was established by Miss Noeline Gourley who" broke her record of 12 1-5 seconds for the 80 metres hurdles by 1-10 sec. On account of a following breeze no application for recognition can be made for either two performances.
