death of mr. j. j. calnan The death occurred suddenly at: his residence, Hungerford Street, Miramar, on Wednesday, of Mr. Joseph John Calnan, father of Mr. J. Calnan, di;Stout\Street,' Shannon. The late Mr. Calnan- was well known to swimmers,. who owe much to his instruction and interest. He had a fine sport and war service record and was 72 years of age. He was formerly custodian of Thorndon Baths and later of Te Aro Baths, retiring in 1932. In the field of sport Mr. Calnan held a fine reeord. He was one of the members of the old Melrose Football Club, and represented New Zealand as an All Black in 1897. He was a member of the Ranfurly Shield team which first brought the trophy to Wellington, playing in the team as a forward. The late gentleman was also a rowing champion and, with Mr. J. R. Crawford, won the pairs championship in 1897-98-99 and 1900-01,
and again in 1903. He stroked the Wellington crew which for two years in succession defeated H.M.S. Challenger's crew in the arinual cutter race from Ngahauranga to Taranaki Street. The late" Mr. Calnan fought ih;; the Boer War and was a member of the New j Zealand Contingent at the Coronation of King Edward VII. The highest references to - his tact and services to swimmers were made by city officials on his retirement, and the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association placed on record his services as a j handicapper. The interment took place at Karori Cemetery on Saturday morriing after Requiem Mass at St. Francis de Saies . Church, Island Bay.
