TWO UNEXPECTED DEFEATS \ AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. The defeats of R. G. Pattinsoh (Canterbury) and Mxs. S, Painter (Wellington) both seeded sixth in their respective events, were surprises of the first day's play in the 53rd New Zealand tennia championships begun on the Htanley Street courts on Saturday. Pattinson; who xanked eighth in New Zealand, waa eliininated by - L. ' P. Roach, a membex of- a well known W aikato tennia family. Roach' played very steadily and showed- good - judgment in placing ahots and moving to the net to win the match in straight aets. . Mra. Paintex waa - beaten by the young Taxanaki playex, Miss'J. Tills, mainly through lapaing iixto erxoxs duxing the aecond set. ■ * A feature of the play waa the improvement shown since the last championahips by the Davis Cup players, McKenzie, J. E. Robaon (Otago) and J. A." Barry (Auckland), and by O. M. Bold (Otago) who played in Europe about the sarue time as the Davis Cup team. All foux xevealed greater speed in sexviee and stxonger stroking action. Robaon had a good win over the formex New Zealand University champion, B. O'Connor, of Wellington, and Bold waa not troubled to defeat M. J.' Fleming (Wanganui). Barry defaulted in the singlea owing to poor health but played the combined double with Mias E. Attwood. In the iirst round of the singlea Mra. J. J. McVay (Wellington) dofeated the New Zealand junior champion, Mias V. Johnson (Auckland) in two sets and Mias M. Iverr (Otago) had an easy -win/ against.
