SOUTH AFRICA PLANTS FLAG ON ISLAND
CAPFTOWX, Jan. 2. The Soutli African frigate Transvaal, which left Capetown under sealed orders on Deceniber 21, planted the Botith African flag on Prince Edward Islaud in tlie Indian Ocean on December 2t;, accordiug to the Pretoria correspondeui of the Cape Times. The operation was carried out at tlie same time as the Australiun expedition landed at lfear.l Island for a similar purpose. It is assumed that tlie Australian and Soutli African operations were plaiitiod in consultation. perhaps as a result or Field-Marshal il ontgoiuery 's visit to tlie two Dominioiis. Tlie chief purpose of tlie aunexation of Price Edward Island is the estab lishment of an air liase as a iink in Commonwealtli coinmunications in th soulhcrn lieniisphere but the island wih also be ttsed as a radio and meteoro'ogical station, says the Daily Telegrapli's Capetown correspondent. A Russian whaling fleet is in the vicinity and it is believed the Soutli African Government forestalled a possible Russian attenipt to land men on the island.
