Received Monday, 10.30 a.m. JERUSALEM, Jan. 4. Arab souices state that 70 were killed as tlie result of an explosion which. wreeked tiie Arab Committee's building in the centre ?f Jalla today. Other sources put the number as low as three. The British estimate; is 59 casualties, includmg'the wounded: - Arabs said that Jews halted two jeeps outside Barclay's Bank. They drove off in oue and left the other, which expioded, blasting the bank building, Arab Committee building, the Central Poiice Station and about 15 sliops. Bei'ore the explosion an unknown person shct dead one Jew and $ wounded two others. t * Arabs killed a British soldier in N Jerusalem. Reuter's correspondent in Jerusalem reports that British troops, using tear gas, drove a wedge between the Jewish defenders and Arab attackers who broke into the Old Ciiy's Jewish quarter. The Arabs had made four attacks when the British i'orced them to retire to a deserted house outside the quarter, from which they sporadically engaged Jewish gunmen.
