EXCELLENT TENNIS IN NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
KEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 28. In two games in succession today members of the New Zealand Davis Cup team lost sets in the quarterlinals of the men's singles at the North Island tennis ehampionsliips at Hawera. The spectators wero unexpectedly treated to the best niatoh to date when IC. Lusk (Auckland) took. the New Zealand singles champion and Davis Cup player (R. S. MeKenzie) to the third set in the quarter linal. McKenzie lost only tvvo sets in the singles last year before he travelled with the Davis Cup team. Another Davis Cup player (J. E. Robson, Otago) was given a strenuous game in the quarter-iinal by A. W. Tills (Auckland). Tlie first set went to Robson 6 — 0, but it was not one-sidcd. Tills kept hini extended in the socond and eventually took it 6 — 2. The iirst four games of the third sot were strongly contested, but Robson made 110 mistake with the remainder of the sot which ended (5 — 2. The semi-fmalists found so far are: — Men's singles, Robson, McKenzie and G. Radonicli (Auckland); women 's singles, Miss M. Beverlev (Waikato), Miss E. Attwood (Auckland), Miss M. Keir (Otago), Miss B. Potter (Auckland); men's doubles, S. Painter and McKenzie (Wellington), O. M. Bold (Lower Ilntt) and Robson; women 's doubles, Mesdames Painter and J. McVav (Wellington), Misses Beverlev and Potter, Misses A. E. Johnson and II. Redwood (Auckland), Misses Attwood and Kerr.
