Ilundreds of pounds worth of fruit and vegelaliles rotted in greengrocers ' shops over ihe holiday period and with the rapid growth accelerated by rain during Friday night growers also sulfered losses. Although shops wero supposed to close at 9 o'clock on Christmas Kve several slayed open for an hour or more later in an endeavour to clear the produce which ivould otherwise have l>een h»t.
