YASDA WINS AWAPUNI FEATURE RACE

Christmas Handicap To The Stormovik The Manawatu Racing Club's three-day Christmas earnivaL was brought to a successfui conclusion under favonrable conditions at Awapuni on Saturday and the feature races were won by Yasda and Castlebrae. Yasda is owned by Mr. Maurice Millar, who last year won the Cup with Saludos. Mr. Millar is a vice-president of the Club and Yasda is trained by C. J. Thomson who last- year won the race for Mr. L. H. Collinson with Broiefield, and who won for Mr. D. Lourie in 1945 with Alethea. The racing was good throughout and there were several very close finishes. The totalisator handled £82,884£ during the day, eompared with £90,997 on the third day last year, and the total for the meeting was £262,591^-, as against £270,728, the decrease being £81361. ■ '

Baksoon Beats Glen Urquhart. Baksoon was . favourite for the hurdles and afte-r heading ,On Time as they ran to the last i'enee he stuck on under pressure to beat Glen Urquliart by just under a length. . 0 On Time was responsibie for most ot the paee and Baksoon, Merger, ttien Urquhart, Timber Bay and Incident t'ollowed in close order after half a mile. Sterling Gold liad lost his rider at the lirst fence. Baksoon, On Time and Glen Urquhart were together clear of Incident as they rau to the last t'ence and Baksoon won nicely froiu Glen Urquhart two lengths in front of On Time. Next were Incident and Merger. Vadoz Beats Pitoitoi. Pitoitoi was favourite for the two-year-old race and aithough slie m ,de a gallant eff'ort to win she was be&teii into second place by the Woodvilietrained eolt, Vadoz, wliich won decisivelv after being oue of the leaders from the start. Vadoz and Kentucky Moon led into tlie straight from Bitoi toi, Perdita and Jacquiuot Bay and it was not long before Vadoz had the race in his lceeping. Pitoitoi responded under pressure but was over two lengths from the winner at the iinisb. Kentuckv Moon was a length away third and the next to linish were Pestai and Deseado. Another for Deep Sea. D.eep .Sea was a sliort priced favourite for the Westbury Hack and after being oue of the beat to begiu he was in cliarge before the straight was reachod and from the moment he hit tne front the issue was uot in doubt. Mon ito, eleventh in the betting order, was alwuys well placed. Yasda won the Freyberg Handicap for Mr. Maurice Millar but it was 4fy a very narrow margin from Barrage which linished very stronglv. The Denbigh was third over a length away aua he only just beat Yandra. Morotai and Argumeiitnti ve led early and the paee was not on until the field had turned into the back stretch where the leader was Argumentati ve, from Morotai, Gay Stroller and Citation, Yasda, The Denbigh, Yandra and Joe's Cobber. Joe's Cobber made a fast run at Ihe half mile to be with Gitatiou in front at the three and they led to tue straight from Morotai, Gay Stroller and Yasda. Yasda and Barrage were in front a furloug from home and Yasda, hard-ridden, lasted well to beat Barrage which had had a great run along the rails. A length and a half away were The Denbigh and Yandra a head apart, and next was Morotai. Castlebrae Goes One Better. With a fine run from outside the last furlong, Gastlebrae, which beat all but The Pagau in the open sprint on Boxing Day, won the Wood Handicap by a neck from Petre Mar, which had been the paeemaker. Wild Note finished fast to get third monev aliead of Specialist. It was a good race run at a fast clip. Running to the half mile tlie order was Petre Mar from Wild Note, Craven, -Specialist, Julius Caesar, Brown Derbv, Castlebrae and Theio Light. Castlebrae moved up to be in a handy position at the three and he went up to taekle Petre Mar soon after the lieid had turned for home. Castlebrae was about a length in front half a furlong from home but Petre Mar (inished very gaiuely and the margin at the post was only a neck. A neck further away cauie Wild Note a head in front ot Specialist with Brown Derby aliuost on terms with Specialist. The Stormovik Just Beat Mesalliance. The finish to the Christmas Handicap was one of the closest of the meeting and the winner was The Stormovik which finished just loo well for the favourite, Mesalliance. Flyiug Dink and Lowry Bay led out of the straight l'ollowed by Alderman and Mesalliance and Flying Dink and Alderman were in front at the six. They were still setting the paee as the field ran to the straight and they wero followed by Tho Stormovik, Sailor Boy, Master Raymond, Mesalliance, Tremello and Lowry Bay. A furlong from home Mesalliance went up to challonge The Stormovik and Mesalliance headed lum. Then in a great linish The Stormovik graduallv overhauled Mesalliance anu Ijeaded liiin just short of the line. Tremello finished well for third two lengths away aud Sailor Boy was fourtn followed by Flying Dink. Shenandoah Paid a Price. -Shenandoah, which had run third to The Missioner and Brig o 'Doon in the Xoviee Handicap earlier in the day, eame out again to win the Highden Handicap and he paid a really good win dividend. Meteorina and Foxtoniaif led out of the straight from Gyration, Lucy Bian, Newel Post, Balcairn, Sir Denzil, Kelmont, Winning Ticlcet, Arvadale and Sailor Girl. Kelmont, Meteorina and Lucy Bian were in cliarge at the six and Lucy Bian, Meteorina, Commevcial, Kelmont, Foxtonian, Shenandoah and Gyration were all well in the picture as the field swept round tlie home turn. A furlong from the line Shenandoah had reaehed the front and he finished well to beat Foxtonian by half a length with Balcairn a length away third. Aretdo Climie
